4 steps to declutter your closet like a pro

Don't have time to declutter your closet? No worries! Follow these four quick and easy steps from expert organizer Nancy Duckman, and you'll have a clean and clutter-free space in no time. You'll finally be able to find that favourite pair of socks, too! (And maybe even that lost car key...)

1. Clear the clutter and elevate your closet game! Sort through your items, grouping them into categories

Ready to become a closet-decluttering pro? Step one on the journey is taking a visual inventory of everything tucked away in your wardrobe - This will allow you to actually see how much you have, away from all the clutter in your closet.

Taking each category out of your closet and grouping them is the best way to do this. Groups are typically:

  • Short sleeve
  • T-shirts
  • Long sleeves
  • Jeans
  • Pants
  • Sweaters
  • Underwear
  • Socks
  • Casual dresses
  • Workout wear

Seeing each group piled in one spot will allow you to see how much you really have. (how many white t-shirts do you really need-some may have stains under the arms from all the wear. ) have a bin or clear bag handy.

This will be for donations, you can also have one for “selling”.

Don't worry if it takes some time, as that's just part of transforming yourself into a decluttering master!

2. Sort through your clothes, getting rid of anything that doesn't fit or that you haven't worn in a while

Sorting through clothes is the kind of task that can easily devolve into a polarizing debate with ourselves - do I keep, or do I toss?

If you're on the fence about any garments, force yourself to part ways! When was the last time you wore those low waisted jeans? Why are you hanging on to that bridesmaid dress you wore 15 years ago?

Step out of your comfort zone and give those pieces away, donate them, or sell them online. Keep only what fits you and those items that you'd throw on before heading out the door.

When it comes to decluttering your closet like a pro, purging can be an empowering experience.

3. Donate any clothes that are in good condition but that you don't want to keep

Donating clothes to someone in need is a great way to show your kind heart and declutter your closet at the same time.

There are donation bins in various locations across the city or several organizations have pick up services.

Put yourself in the shoes of people who need a little extra help, and pay it forward with your preloved items - can't get much better than that!

4. Store seasonal clothing and other items that you don't use often in bins or on shelves out of the way

The key to conquering wardrobe chaos is to get organized—and there's no better way to do that than by storing seasonal clothing and other items you don't use often outside of your closet.

Investing in bins, shelves, or another creative storage solution will help make the most of tight spaces and will free up real estate in your closet for the garments you rock all-year-round.

Plus, stashing away those not-often used items is a great way to remember what you have so you'll never find yourself saying "I don't have anything to wear" or perhaps you will decide that you can finally live without them.

There's no need to be overwhelmed by a cluttered closet - with a little time and effort, you can declutter like a pro! Follow the steps above and you'll be on your way to an organized, functional closet in no time.

But if you don't have the time or energy to tackle this project yourself, that's OK! Get in touch with me, Nancy Duckman, professional organizer and owner of Ducks in a Row T.O., and I'd be happy to help you declutter your space - so you can focus on what really matters.
